Kern Media® provides SEO, AEO and GEO consulting on the platforms eCommerce brands and lead generation businesses run on. Most of our platform work is on Shopify and WordPress. We also work with Adobe Commerce, Magento, Webflow, Thought Industries, custom CMS systems and multi-CMS setups, and we can work with any CMS. Each platform has its own SEO quirks, and each can hide content from AI tools in its own way.
Shopify SEO and GEO
Shopify handles a lot of SEO basics well, but its fixed structure creates a few predictable problems:
- Duplicate product paths. Products can load under both /products/ and /collections/…/products/ URLs. Themes often link to the collection version, which splits signals even with canonical tags in place.
- Fixed URL structure. Shopify adds /products/, /collections/ and /pages/ to most URLs, so migrations to Shopify need careful redirect mapping.
- Apps that load with JavaScript. Reviews, FAQs and product details added by apps often load after the page renders, which most AI crawlers can’t see.
- Thin collection pages. A product grid with no helpful copy gives Google and AI tools little reason to rank or cite the page.
- Duplicate structured data. Themes and apps can both output product schema, sometimes with conflicting prices or reviews.
WordPress SEO and GEO
WordPress is flexible, which also means there’s more to go wrong:
- Index bloat from archives. Tag, category, author, date and attachment pages can create thousands of thin URLs.
- Plugin conflicts. Two SEO or schema plugins can output duplicate titles, meta descriptions or structured data.
- Heavy page builders. Some builders slow pages down or load key content with JavaScript.
- Caching and security settings. CDN and firewall rules (like Cloudflare’s bot settings) can block AI crawlers without anyone noticing.
Adobe Commerce and Magento SEO and GEO
Large catalogs on Adobe Commerce and Magento usually need the most technical SEO work:
- Layered navigation. Filters for size, color, price and more can create millions of crawlable URL combinations.
- Duplicate category and product paths. The same product can be reachable through several category URLs.
- Internal site search pages getting crawled and indexed.
- Upgrades and replatforming. Moving between versions, or off Magento entirely, is where redirects and rankings most often get lost.
- Headless front ends. PWA and headless builds can serve AI crawlers an empty page if content isn’t rendered on the server.
Is Webflow Good for SEO?
We can work with Webflow, but it has real SEO limitations, so we usually advise against it for companies that depend on search and AI visibility:
- Rigid URL structure. CMS items have to sit one level under a single collection folder, so you can’t build deeper, topic-based URL paths.
- Limited technical control. Settings that are simple on other platforms, like custom structured data for each template, often need workarounds or custom code.
- Harder to scale. As content and catalog needs grow, plan limits and template rules make larger SEO programs harder to run.
Online Course Platforms Like Thought Industries
Learning platforms like Thought Industries are built for courses, checkout and the logged-in learner experience, not for SEO. For an education client, we found the platform’s public pages gave us too little control over the content and structure that Google and AI tools rely on.
The bigger problem was JavaScript rendering. Pages built this way send a mostly empty page and fill in the content with JavaScript in the visitor’s browser. Google can usually render that, but most LLM crawlers, like GPTBot (ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Claude) and PerplexityBot, don’t run JavaScript. They see the empty page, so course descriptions, pricing and FAQs never reach the AI tools buyers use to compare options.
Our advice was a WordPress front end for marketing pages, with Thought Industries installed in a subfolder of the same domain for course checkout and the logged-in customer experience. That puts the marketing pages in plain HTML that Google and AI crawlers can read, gives them full SEO control, keeps everything on one domain, and lets the learning platform do what it does best.
What About Wix and Squarespace?
We formally advise against Wix and Squarespace for anything but a small business website with few pages and few marketing needs. They’re fine for a simple site, but they limit technical control as a site grows. If search and AI visibility matter to your business, we’ll recommend a platform that gives you more room to grow.
Custom CMS and Multi-CMS Setups
We also work with custom CMS systems and companies that run more than one platform, such as a store on one system and a blog or learning platform on another. Multi-CMS setups need extra care, since templates, tracking, internal links and structured data have to work consistently across every system.
Can AI Tools Read Your Platform’s Content?
Google can render JavaScript, but most AI crawlers, like GPTBot (ChatGPT), ClaudeBot (Claude) and PerplexityBot, read only the HTML your server sends. If your product details, reviews, FAQs or pricing load with JavaScript after the page renders, AI tools may never see them.
That’s bad for LLM visibility in two ways. AI tools can’t cite or recommend content they can’t read, and when they do mention your brand, they fill the gaps from other sites, which may be outdated or wrong. JavaScript-heavy setups to watch for include headless and PWA front ends, page builders, review and FAQ apps on Shopify, and hosted platforms like learning management systems.
The fix is to make sure key content is in the HTML your server sends, through server-side rendering, pre-rendering or moving that content out of JavaScript widgets.
Our technical SEO audits crawl your site the way Google and AI bots do, so you know exactly which content each one can read on your platform.
Platform Migrations and Redesigns
Switching platforms (for example, from Magento to Shopify) or launching a redesign is one of the most common causes of traffic drops. We review new pages, redesigns and migrations before they go live and again after, including redirect maps, indexation, canonicals and schema. If traffic hasn’t recovered a few weeks after launch, we start fixing what’s holding it back. See our traffic recovery service.
Platform SEO FAQs
Which platforms does Kern Media work with?
Most of our platform work is on Shopify and WordPress. We also work with Adobe Commerce, Magento, Webflow, Thought Industries, custom CMS systems and multi-CMS setups, and we can work with any CMS.
Is Webflow good for SEO?
Webflow works for smaller marketing sites, but it limits URL structure and technical control as a site grows. For companies that depend on search and AI visibility, we usually advise against it.
Should we use Wix or Squarespace?
Only for a small business website with few pages and few marketing needs. For anything larger, we formally advise against both and recommend a platform that gives you more control.
Do you need developer access to our platform?
Usually not. View access to your CMS is fine for most work. Your team or agency implements changes from our technical specs, and we can implement for you if your team doesn’t have the resources.
Can AI tools read content that loads with JavaScript?
Often not. Google can render JavaScript, but most AI crawlers, like those behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, read only the HTML your server sends. Content added by apps, plugins or headless front ends after the page loads may be invisible to them.
Can you help with a platform migration?
Yes. We review migration plans and redirect maps before launch and check the site again after it goes live. If traffic hasn’t recovered after a few weeks, we start fixing what’s holding it back.
On a free 30-minute call, we’ll look at your site, your platform and your Google and AI visibility, and tell you what we’d fix first.
