If your SEO or GEO agency isn’t delivering, switching is usually less risky than staying with something that isn’t working. The risk isn’t the switch itself. It’s losing access, data and history along the way. This page covers how to tell it’s time, what to collect before you go and what the first month looks like if you switch to Kern Media®.
How Do I Know My SEO Agency Isn’t Working?
A slow month isn’t a reason to leave, since SEO usually takes 3 to 6 months to show measurable progress. These patterns are a reason to look closer:
- Reports without results. You see rankings and traffic, but never leads or revenue, and nobody can say what the work is worth.
- You can’t tell what they did. The report looks the same every month, with no clear list of work done or what’s next.
- No plan for AI search. They can’t tell you whether ChatGPT or other AI tools mention your brand, or what they’re doing about it.
- Traffic is falling with no diagnosis. A drop should come with a clear answer: what dropped, why and what the fix is.
- The senior person disappeared. You were sold by an expert, then handed to a junior account manager.
- They own your accounts. Your Search Console, GA4 or tag manager is under the agency’s login instead of your company’s.
- Promises nobody can keep. Guaranteed rankings, guaranteed ChatGPT placement or monthly link packages.
What Should I Ask My Current Agency First?
If you’re on the fence, these questions usually make the answer clear:
- What did you work on over the past 3 months, and what changed because of it?
- Which pages, keywords and AI prompts are our priorities, and why?
- How are our leads and revenue from organic search and AI tools trending?
- How do you measure our visibility in ChatGPT and other AI tools?
- Who does the work on our account each month?
- What’s the plan for the next 3 months?
Good answers come with specifics. Vague answers, or a new slide deck instead of answers, tell you a lot.
Will Switching SEO Agencies Hurt My Rankings?
Not by itself. Google ranks your site, your content and the links pointing to it, not the agency that manages them. Most problems during a switch come from things getting lost or switched off:
- Losing admin access to Google Search Console, GA4 or Google Tag Manager, along with your historical data
- Tracking tags, redirects or scripts that lived in the agency’s accounts and get removed when you leave
- Links from sites the agency controls, which can disappear when the contract ends
- Half-finished technical work, like a migration or redirect project, with no documentation
Collect what’s on the checklist below before you give notice, and the switch itself shouldn’t cost you rankings.
What Should I Get From My Old Agency Before I Switch?
- Admin or owner access to Google Search Console, GA4, Google Tag Manager, Bing Webmaster Tools and your CMS, under your company’s own accounts
- Past monthly reports and any dashboards
- Keyword and AI prompt tracking lists, with exports of the history
- Technical audits, open tickets and redirect maps
- Content briefs, the content calendar and any drafts in progress
- A list of links they built or placements they paid for, plus any disavow file they submitted
- Logins for any SEO tools your company paid for
What Does the First Month Look Like If We Switch to Kern Media?
- Kickoff (week 1). A 1-hour call about your goals, customers and competitors, and what’s been tried before. The reports and history you collected help here.
- Access and setup (weeks 1 to 2). We get access to Search Console, GA4 and your CMS, and set up AI visibility tracking for the buyer prompts that matter most to you.
- Audits and roadmap (months 1 to 2). Technical, content and AI visibility analysis, then a prioritized roadmap. We start with pages that already get traffic, since those usually move fastest.
You work directly with Dan Kern, our founder, from the first call, and there’s no long-term contract. See Working With Kern Media for how communication, reporting and billing work.
Can You Review Our Current Agency’s Work Before We Decide?
Yes. On a free 30-minute consultation, we’ll review your current agency’s work along with your goals and your Google and AI visibility, and tell you honestly what we see.
Anything beyond that call is paid work. A technical SEO audit or AI visibility audit gives you a full picture and a prioritized plan, whoever ends up doing the work.
Switching SEO Agencies FAQs
Will switching SEO agencies hurt our rankings?
Not by itself. Rankings come from your site, content and links, not from who manages them. The real risk is losing access and history, so make sure your company owns its Google Search Console, GA4 and other accounts, and get copies of past reports, keyword lists and any open technical work before you switch.
When is a bad time to switch SEO agencies?
In the middle of a site migration or redesign. If you’re mid-launch, get the redirect map and launch plan in writing first, or bring in your new partner to review it before go-live.
How long does it take to switch to Kern Media?
Most clients have a kickoff call in week 1 and finish access and setup in weeks 1 to 2. Audits and a prioritized roadmap follow in months 1 to 2.
Do I have to sign a long contract to switch?
Not with us. Every Kern Media engagement is month-to-month, with 30 days’ written notice to cancel. Check your current agency’s notice period before you give notice.
Do you work with white-label or reseller agencies?
We don’t do white-label work, but we’re happy to partner with agencies and refer clients to each other.
On a free 30-minute call, we’ll look at where things stand and what we’d do first, and tell you honestly whether switching makes sense. You’ll talk directly with Dan, not a salesperson.
